Creating a Blog Button or HTML Button 101; Networking Saturday

Note: This tutorial post is a bit long so if you are looking for the linkup please Click Here To Jump To The Bottom, it looks like this...

I know most bloggers or armchair web designers learn how to create a basic button early on but because there are new people blogging every day I  thought I would post a basic how to on a button I use often.

This one very versatile and the code can be altered to create quite a diverse group that has many uses.
It is often used to create buttons on websites that lead you to another page, shop, FB page, basically anything online; essentially all it is is a fancy URL link.  Here's the URL I am going to create a button for today: https://www.facebook.com/ButterflyInTheAttic
  1. Choose a small image you would like to use for your button
    1. Tip make sure that there is either enough room for your Call To Action or Title
    2. If you find a picture you like but it doesn't have enough room you can create box to put it in leaving you room for your wording (good example of that is my Networking Saturday image above)
  2. Once you have the image completed you will need to find a place to store it "online" so that it is actually on the web (note it is not the same as storing your pictures in the cloud that is data storage.)  Some simplest options are:
    1. Flickr- with this type of site you will need to make sure that your image is saved as open to the public otherwise it will not work.  To do this on Flickr go to privacy settings select visible to everyone and make it publicly searchable
      1. Once your image is upload they will give you some options and instruction on how to grab the code
      2. Perk of a Flickr account is that it is free, easy and gives you 1 terabyte of data (that's a whole lot of data for free)
    2. Right here on Blogger (far easiest)
      1. Create a page or post you will never publish
      2. Upload your image as normal
      3. Click the HTML tab so you can see your code
      4. Highlight the part that ends in a .JPG
        1. An example of what you are looking for:                 https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFjUkBJE05OznCNB66DBmaq62ChIrCV7z5htdxCBTPLojIdli9JyyOBPY9bbR1Uu8EcEM08Gp_rLxpJFz0IvAOuYX-g6zcOu0oQtT8pydGeXzhWNorU3180vLE7sbReVtvOvujzW4FunQ/s1600/logo+butterflyintheattic.jpg
      5. Copy it and paste it somewhere handy like an open document in Notepad or word
      6. Instead of clicking "publish" click "save" then "Close" that is it
  3. For the link you want to have your button take your viewers to:
    1. Go to the published page, site, post whatever you plan to send people to
    2. Once it is open, highlight the URL (in the bar at the top of the page)
      1. For today's example it is: https://www.facebook.com/ButterflyInTheAttic
    3. Click copy and paste it also into the open document so you have it ready
  4. Copy the following code:
    1. <center><a href="YOUR SITE'S URL HERE"><img src="YOUR IMAGE'S CODE HERE" width="200" height="200"/></a></center>
  5. For blogger sidebars:
    1. Open the Layout section of your dashboard
    2. Click to Add a new widget and select the option to add an HTML
    3. Paste the code you just copied into that box (add a title if you want but it is not necessary)
    4. Highlight the colored areas and add your own information there
    5. Save and you are done!
  6. For other sites or to put it within your post
    1. Chose to work in the site or post as HTML (for blogger that is simply clicking the tab with that title)
    2. Paste the code where you would like to see it show up.  Tip: For me if there is a lot of data and it is hard pinpoint the spot I mark it while I am in the Compose tab by typing a series of ************ in the spot then it is easily recognisable while I am working with the HTML.  You will, of course, delete those once you are done building your button.
    3. Add your Data (the image JPG code and your site URL)
    4. Save your work and you are done! (See the example of my button and its code below)
<center><a href="https://www.facebook.com/ButterflyInTheAttic"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFjUkBJE05OznCNB66DBmaq62ChIrCV7z5htdxCBTPLojIdli9JyyOBPY9bbR1Uu8EcEM08Gp_rLxpJFz0IvAOuYX-g6zcOu0oQtT8pydGeXzhWNorU3180vLE7sbReVtvOvujzW4FunQ/s1600/logo+butterflyintheattic.jpg" width="200" height="200"/></a></center>

Going to the Beach on Throwback Thursday

America has been going to the beach for hundreds of years.  Whether it is the lake side, ocean side or even the pond side (LOL) the beach is the place to be.  It just so happens that even in the early 1900's the beach was a favorite past time.  Spending a hot summer day hanging out alongside a large body of water is the absolute best way to spend your time.

Second Annual Christmas In July Giveaway Invite; Promote Your Shop!

I am looking for shops to participate in a group giveaway for a great Christmas In July Giveaway campaign.  This Christmas In July Giveaway is open to all shops that are in the tradition of Etsy but not limited to Etsy.  So in other words if you are on Etsy, Artfire, Supadupa, a Free Standing Site or any other platform as long as you would fit the vintage or handmade theme.

There is a $5 minimum value and of course the higher the value the more attention it will attract. Each person will be responsible for sending their item directly to the winner. The value of your donation will determine how many links will be promoted in addition to your shop. All participants will have their shop link promoted +1 and additional links are as follows:

    $5.00 prize donation = Shop link +1
  $10.00 prize donation = Shop link +2
  $15.00 prize donation = Shop link +3
  $20.00 prize donation = Shop link +4
>$20.00 prize donation = Shop link +5

Please note that due to FB's strict rules on "liking" pages we will only be able to direct people to "view" FB pages and not "like" them but I will include them in the giveaway if shop owners want that link promoted.

I will be posting the giveaway on my blog and running it throughout the month of July. Participants are expected to promote at minimum 4 times a week via twitter, FB, pinterest, G+ etc.

If you are interested in participating please convo me or email me at ButterflyInTheAttic [at] yahoo [dot] com

I will need the following information:
For physical items:
Item or Items to be given away
Professional quality pictures of the item
Value
Brief Description of item
The working links that you would like to have promoted
Shop Name and link (some of us have multiple shops)

For Digital Items:
