The Attic Is Ready for October

Autumn Remembered Handmade Journal
The Attic Is Ready for October

There’s something about the last day of September that feels like standing in a doorway.

Behind us are the softer days of early autumn, and just ahead come October mornings, glowing leaves, pumpkins on porches, longer evenings, and all those wonderfully nostalgic little things that make this season feel special.

Here at Butterfly in the Attic, October also means the attic begins to change.

The Halloween treasures come out, autumn colors settle into every corner, old papers and handmade journals seem especially at home, and I find myself reaching for all the warm, weathered, slightly mysterious things I love.

I’ve been busy behind the scenes lately, organizing the shop and giving everything a proper place to live—from the Curiosity Cabinet and Hidden Drawer to the Paper Garden, Maker’s Worktable, and all the other little corners of the attic.

There are new things still to come, too.

For now, though, I’m simply looking forward to October.

I hope you’ll come wander through the attic with me this month and see what turns up.

Happy almost October! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฆ‹

You’re the Star Blog Hop – September 2026 Home Feature Week

Before we continue on to this week’s party, I’d love to share a little something from my blog. With October just around the corner, I’ve been thinking about childhood Halloweens—the costumes, cool autumn evenings, crunchy leaves underfoot, and those simple traditions that made the season feel so magical. Come reminisce with me in Halloween Memories, Costumes and Crunching Leaves.

Halloween Memories: Costumes, Crunching Leaves, and a Little Bit of Magic

There is something about Halloween that takes me right back to childhood. Maybe it’s the cool evening air, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, or the sight of a little one hurrying up a walkway with a candy bucket in hand.

Halloween has always had its creepy side, of course. There are ghosts in the windows, jack-o’-lanterns glowing on porches, and the occasional decoration that makes you think twice before ringing the doorbell. But tucked in among all those spooky things are some of the sweetest memories.

When I was about four or five, I went trick-or-treating as Raggedy Ann. My mother sewed my costume by hand, and for the finishing touch, she dyed a mop head to make my red wig! I still smile thinking about the time and imagination she put into making that costume for me. It wasn’t something she simply picked up at a store. She made it, right down to Raggedy Ann’s bright red hair.

Years later, I had the pleasure of watching my own children experience that same Halloween excitement.

Junior was Spider-Man. His costume was store-bought, but that didn’t matter one bit to him—he absolutely loved superheroes when he was a boy. Ashley was Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, complete with the sparkly shoes she adored and a stuffed Toto to accompany her. Those little details made the costume special to her.

Looking at those photographs now, I don’t just see costumes. I remember the excitement of getting ready, the anticipation of heading out the door, and the happiness of seeing the children become their favorite characters for an evening.

I remember my own cold nose as we walked along the autumn sidewalks, listening to the crunch of fallen leaves and looking ahead for the next house with its porch light on. We would walk block after block in the chilly night air. The children were thrilled to see one another’s costumes—and, naturally, to collect as much free candy as their bags could hold.

Parents would walk alongside their little ghosts, superheroes, princesses, and storybook characters. Sometimes the grown-ups dressed up, too, joining in the fun instead of simply watching from the sidewalk. For a few hours, the whole neighborhood seemed to be part of the same celebration.

Perhaps that is why I’m so drawn to old-fashioned Halloween decorations. A grinning jack-o’-lantern or a funny little black cat can bring back the feeling of those evenings: just spooky enough to be exciting, but full of warmth and childhood wonder.

I’ve recently added a few vintage-inspired Halloween pieces to Butterfly in the Attic that remind me of that playful, old-fashioned side of the holiday. They have the sort of character that makes me think of Halloween decorations brought out year after year, each one carrying a few memories along with it.

In Halloween in the Attic, you’ll find a collection of vintage-inspired finds, handmade creations, and carefully selected vintage treasures to bring a little old-fashioned magic to your Halloween.

I hope this Halloween brings you a little of that magic, whether you’re taking children trick-or-treating, greeting costumed visitors at your door, or simply enjoying the glow of a jack-o’-lantern on a cool autumn evening.

Do you remember a favorite Halloween costume from your childhood—or one you made for your own children? I would love to hear about it in the comments.

When New Paper Learns to Look Old | At the Worktable

At the Worktable with the Grungy Halloween Owl Tags

There is something wonderfully contradictory about spending so much time making something new look as though it has already lived a very long life.

That was certainly the case with these little owl tags.

They began with old book pages — not one layer, but four, folded and glued together to give each tag some substance. From there, I started building the surface little by little: ink around the edges, modeling and crackle paste worked through stencils, and layers of alcohol ink that settled into all those raised and uneven places.

And somewhere along the way, they stopped looking like pieces I had just made at my worktable.

They began to look found.

That is always one of my favorite moments.

Grungy Halloween Owl Journal Tags on Shopify

The Beauty Is in the Layers

When I make something grungy or timeworn, I don't really want the aging to look like decoration sitting on top of the paper. I want it to feel as though it happened there.

A darkened edge by itself can make paper look older. But add a little texture, a crack running through the surface, color caught unevenly in the crevices, a loose thread and a piece of ragged fabric, and suddenly there is a history that wasn't there before.

Of course, we know that history is imaginary.

But isn't that part of the fun?

These tags were made in four different finishes — Weathered Stone, Haunted Verdigris, Faded Ledger, and Rust & Ruin — and although they began the same way, the layers gave each pair its own personality.

And Then Came the Owls

Each set has two owls, one orange and one black, tucked into little nests of black thread.

I could have stopped there.

Naturally, I didn't.

There are torn pieces of coffee-dyed fabric and cheesecloth, tiny metal fasteners and all of those deliberately imperfect edges and surfaces that make me want to pick something up and look a little closer.

The backs are finished with coffee-dyed writing paper, because I wanted these to remain useful tags rather than becoming purely decorative pieces. There is still room for a name, a note, a bit of journaling or whatever story their eventual owner decides they should carry.

And I think that may be what I like most about making pieces like these.

I can give them the beginning of a story, but I don't have to give them the ending.

From the Hidden Drawer

The finished owl tags have now found their way into The Hidden Drawer, which seems like exactly the right place for them.

They look a little weathered, a little mysterious and perhaps as though somebody tucked them away years ago and forgot about them.

Except, of course, I know better.

I remember the book pages.

I remember the glue.

I remember the paste and the ink and the threads and all the layers that came before those wonderfully grungy little owls finally looked as though they had been waiting years to be found.

Sometimes making something old begins with making something new.

And then you just have to give it a little history.

Until next time,
Colleen
