Wait A Minute Mister Postman; Postcard Party 54

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin was our first postmaster?  He accepted the position in 1775 which paid $1,000 a year.  Often we think that due to inflation that this sum of money would be significant, but if he was paid this rate in today's market he would be earning about $30,000. Hopefully he kept his day job too :)

I feel like showing off some of my beautiful girls today:

Wait A Minute Mister Postman Postcard Party 53

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

Lithographs are made from actual photographs utilizing a process called Color Separation.  This technique was developed in Germany, which is why so many of our American scenes say printed in Germany on the back.  Color Separation literally separates the colors in the photograph enabling the printer to print the images using colored dots.  (of course it is more technical than I can intelligently explain but this sums it up in a nutshell)

Wait A Minute Mister Postman Postcard Party 52

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

In the 1870s congress approved government production of postcards, these cards were the only ones that could don the label Postal Card.  While private mailing cards will still allowed through the postal system they would cost double the government Postal Cards (2 cents instead of 1 cent.)

I have a private mailing card in  my collection but alas I haven't a good example of a Postal Card, so this one if from shop,

Wait A Minute Mister Postman Postcard Party 51

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

Postcards were first introduced around 1860 in Germany, Australia and the US.  The idea of writing a message on an unsealed card was met with strong resistance because anyone, including servants, could read the private notes but it was cheaper than using an envelope so it still took off.  I guess even then Money Talks :)

Wait A Minute Mister Postman Postcard Party 49

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

Because postcards where an inexpensive method of sending a holiday greeting, Halloween Postcards reached a peak during the early 1900's.  Although these cards were popular, they are rare and difficult to find making them highly collectible and valuable.  Depending on the condition Antique and Vintage Halloween Postcards can fetch between $20 up to $600 a card.  To identify early Edwardian period card look at the spelling of Halloween; during this period it was spelled "Hallow'een."

*********************************************************************************************************************************

I am in the mood for some Halloween Tradition so it was a bit easier to pick my favorite this week.  But we certainly have a fine collection of cards displayed last week.  I can't wait to see what this week brings.

My pick this week is from KrisGoesPicken
https://www.etsy.com/listing/202572029/rare-antique-embossed-halloween-postcard?ref=shop_home_active_19
Make sure you stop by Kristin's shop at KrisGoesPicken, she has many other grand, rare holiday cards including more Hallow'een!

Wait A Minute Mister Postman Postcard Party 48

Tuesday's Postcard Fun Fact:

Real Photograph Postcards are one-of-a-kind because they are not a replicated print of an image or photograph but they "are" the photograph.  This makes the cards more rare and increases the value of the card over a mass produced printed card.  Depending on the subject these cards can be considered quite valuable.  Subjects depicting historic moments, train stations, depots, etc are more desirable; while more commonly photographed places (castles) or cities such as Chicago or New York are less valued.

*********************************************************************************************************************************

Once again it was such a challenge to pick my featured image this morning.  I thank everyone who participated.  I thought this great digital image of an Antique Real Photograph Postcard was very fitting for todays fun fact.  What an awesome digital from BearStreet
