I have to admit that SEOs still confuse the heck out of me. But the reality is, I need to earn more about them and so do you if you have a blog or eCommerce site. I will not fake some extensive knowledge or profound information but what I will do is provide you a few links that I found extremely useful for us laymen.
The first sight is a blog that lays out the basics from Google's guide on SEOs but in a language most of us can easily digest . www.techrepublic.com. This article goes over how to create them and gives some links to use for checking the health of your site, etc.
Also, I just learned that there is such a thing as Negative SEOs. We all know that for years companies (large and small) have used bogus social media accounts, blogs, etc to inflate their followers and interactions to make it seem that they are more important to the public than they truly are. Why? because it pushes their sites to the top of Google's search. Unfortunately while Google tries to protect the user from bogus sites it may mean we get a red flag too without even knowing what we did. Sometimes we did nothing and can be blocked because other's are either "helping us" or intentionally hacking into our accounts and creating redirects among other things.
Sites for Viagra, payday loans, porn etc. maybe creating page redirects we don't even know about. Of course there are ways to monitor this and in another great post I found a few links to tools for this. The nice thing, not only does the tools help monitor for intrusive sites and content but it can help me in monitoring some other stats. Reading this post was very helpful http://moz.com/blog/preparing-for-negative-seo
Unfortunately for many of us (maybe most) our shops and blogs are not our only jobs. We start out with this great idea and are inspired to go for our dreams and then find that everywhere we turn problems and more things we never would have thought we needed. Since we do not have a large marketing staff or developers at our fingertips we will need to rely on good ole fashioned team work. So please post any tips or links that you have found essential for your online health.
Thank you and have a blessed day!
