Data Storage; Networking Saturday

Data Storage on Networking Saturday post and linkup party.

Data Storage may be a topic that is more directed to people just starting their businesses but I do think it is a very important topic. Over the years I have felt the bitter pain of losing data despite my best effort to be careful and smart about what I use.

At first I, like so many, found myself at the mercy of what data storage was available on my computer and backing up on floppy discs then CDs but those become corrupted or outdated and the data was lost.  Then I tried the flash drive which worked magnificently until one day I inserted it and ... nothing.  Again my data forever lost and the drive found its way into the graveyard (the closet that I keep all my "maybe someday I can afford to have it retrieved from the dead")
After trying expensive flash drives, cheap flash drives, and external drives I was ready to find something different, besides my graveyard has no more real estate left!  That is when I began to investigate The Cloud.  It almost sounded too good to be true and you know what they say about that.

Looking at cost, security, ratings, etc. I decided to take the plunge with Just Cloud.
This worked wonderful until a glitch set my account back in time saying that I hadn't paid and the next payment was due in 1974.  I called the company and after many heated telephone conversations and emails I came to the conclusion that they didn't know how to fix it or that it was simply to expensive to fix it.  So that made me very leary of using the cloud making me shy away from it for quite sometime.

Fast forwarding a year to later I was reading an article on the plane that was raving about Dropbox.  I still had not found a trustworthy place to store my data. I again took the leap of faith and now have had Dropbox for over 3 years.  It is one of the most cost efficient storage sites and provides me with a terabyte of data.  So far I am delighted with it's performance and have not had any problems with accessibility.

I would recommend that those business owners that use a mass of data storage for digitals etc look into a cloud system but research it thoroughly.  The other important tip is to passcode it well do  not create an easy to hack password and expect it be safe and change your password often.

Here are a few sites that may help you chose:

Please note that there is a diffence between Backup Storage and Cloud Storage.  Backup does just that backs up your computer and files incase you have a crash etc but you are usually not able to just retrieve specific files. This would be used to reinstall your information after you get your computer up and running again.  Using Cloud Storage you can create files and store specific data.  Some Cloud Storage also offers a backup storage too so you wouldn't need to have a separate place for that.

After venting a bit last week about Facebook, a.k.a Big Brother, I decided to creating a page dedicated to listing all of the marketing tools, apps, and sites that could potentially work for your small business.  I have invested a significant amount of time in my small business and have had some great experiences with tools and apps and some not so great.

Here are a couple of marketing tools that I just couldn't live without (hope you find them useful) for many more links go to my page http://www.butterflyintheattic.com/p/social-marketing-links-and-apps.html

https://www.hootsuite.com This is a site that will allow you to tweet to multipe twitter accounts at one time and schedule your tweets.  It also has an auto tweet feature but I usually use the manual method.  I love this and many of my friends use it.  Best of all it is free.  I tried their Pro version but it just wasn't worth the investment.

https://brittanysbest.com/treasurybox-chrome-extension/
Brittany's Best has a great Treasury Box extension for Chrome that will allow you to create an image from treasuries that can then be posted on FB and G+

http://www.treasurypin.com/  Treasury Pin does the same as the Treasury Box but for Pinterest.

Again this is just a sneak peak there are several more that I will be adding to the page.  I would love it if you would share your favorite marketing tools and apps so I can add them to the page.

Have a blessed day and Enjoy the linkup!

After reading about the new and upcoming changes that Facebook is making to their algorithm, I have come to conclude that as a small business owner I have a very dysfunctional relationship with Facebook.

It isn't exactly Love/Hate but more like dependent/Hate or that I am just waiting for the day that it becomes what I feel it promised it would become.

When Facebook first came out I could see the wonderful potential for small businesses such as myself so I built my profile, built my pages, and built a solid following just to find my fingers smacked at every turn.  What kind of product calls you to use it and then smacks you down when you do use it?  If that is not dysfunction I don't know what is.
Yes, I realize that they are in it for the money but Facebook has become too much like "Big Brother" and I find that I am a little concerned with the amount of power this group has over my businesses.  Had I realized how monopolizing it would become, I am not sure if I would have used Facebook in the beginning.

With all this being said I would love to hear how you use your Facebook account, what you use; pages, groups, apps, etc., and your overall experience; have you ever been banned, blocked, if it has helped your business grow, etc.  Please share :)

So I am struggling a bit with my health this week so I am not going to be writing anything too terribly profound.  But what I have come to conclude is that SEOs are one the most frustrating things that I have had to work with.  And being that I am not an expert I will be simply applying what I can from what information I can understand and the rest is going to have to be good old fashioned foot work.

What I do know that has help me with sales is Networking and promoting others along with myself.  So with that being said here are a couple upcoming or ongoing events (aside from this one) that are tried and true:
Julie and Blu's Mother's Day Countdown at:

Unfortunately I have not been able to locate the post that I wanted to reference since it was specific to Etsy so I will have to rely on my memory.  I also like to give you the link so you can read it yourself so if I find it I will share in the future.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/193302651

In her post she said that our title should never lead with the same words even if we are listing multiple items that are very similar. This is because that the SEO robot will look at it as the same item and skip it.  For me this is huge because all of my item title started with "Antique Postcard.... or Vintage Postcard ...."  This is one of the reasons it it taking me so long to update everything.  What she is saying to do is list at as "Victorian Lady in Merry Widow... Vintage Postcard" and then do not start a title with Victorian Lady again.

I also read that you need to have the same exact wording from your title in the body of your description as the first sentence.  This was also something I wasn't doing because I had a format that gave just the facts: size, type, Artist, publisher etc. it never had been a written description in story format.  I didn't want to change this so I have been simply copying the title into the body and then adding my details.  I am not sure if this is helping but it certainly could not hurt.

The third take away from her post was that the tags need to be the same words used in your title in the same sequence.  So if I have a title "Victorian Woman in Merry Widow Hat.... Vintage Postcard"  My first tags should be: "Victorian Woman" "Merry Widow Hat" "...." "Vintage Postcard" then the tags left can be used for further description in this case something like "postcard" "ephemera" etc.

The last take away for me was to always use google's Adword to check the search rank for my words.  She said not to assume that the one that makes sense will be the most searched.  So true; I had "Antique Postcards....." in all of my titles (at the beginning) when in fact it is a very low ranking search, while "Vintage Postcards" is a very high ranking search and while it doesn't describe the age accurately that is the one that will bring me the most people.

I will be back next week with some more great tips while I read, study and experiment with my own SEO's.

Have a very blessed and prosperous week my friends.  :)

So my best intentions were to work on creating proper SEOs for my Etsy accounts, didn't happen.  Unfortunately work was so busy at my day job there were several days of extra hours and by the time I got home I was pooped.

So I guess today's lesson is about learning your limitations and listing to your body.  I am a firm believer in pushing ones limits and seeing how far you can go but the payoff needs to mirror the effort.  I decided to just not worry about Etsy much this week because, at best, I may make an extra $50 for all the effort I needed to put into.   It was better to put my energy into my day job, that pays the bills, than to over extend myself and do a terrible job at everything.

It has taken me a long time to learn not to beat myself up for not meeting all my goals.  But for those of you who have my type A personality; we are not true superheros and it is OK.  It is OK to go with the flow and let things fall where they do and then gather up and move forward.

It looks like a much less hectic week for me coming up so hopefully I will have some great information and maybe some cool stats to share.  Until then enjoy the link up :)

I've been working on my SEO project for a few weeks, I am purposely dedicating time to learning and using seos in my sites.

While I had seos in my blog, I realize that I didn't have effective ones.  I like to tell stories, so my focus was on telling you about my life, my shop and just basically about me but I was not thinking about my key words, let alone looking them up to see where they stand in frequency of searches.

So during this last week I have been forcing myself to use the tips and information I have read on creating effective seos.  The keyword planner in Google Adwords has been absolutely necessary in finding my keywords.

To use it you add the word or words that best describes your post or item, next give them the url to your site.  Then you pick categories that it would fit into; for items you are selling it is easier but for blog posts you might want to start out more general.  Click "Get Ideas" it will generate a list of words that have been used in searches.  Choose the ones that best fit your item or topic that has the highest number of searches.

If you find that the word/s you chose have very few searches, think of a different one, make sure it still describes your post/item, and then get ideas from that search.  It will get easier the more you use it.  I don't want to  make this post long so if you have questions add them to the comment section and we can address specifics.  Or please add any experience you have had on this subject.

Even though at first it seemed a daunting task, it really isn't so bad and I think it has been paying off.  Unfortunately I have been fighting with Google Domain which drastically affected my stats so I don't have clean data to rely on.  But it still looks like using appropriate seos has helped my stats aside from the huge dip when I tried to add my own domain (argh!)

My next project is to work on Etsy which is a bit more challenging since I need to reconstruct most of my listings.  Next week I will share some great information on seos for Etsy that was posted on a FB group I belong to.  It was a very helpful post and hopefully I will have some happy stats to share with you as a result.

Thank you and have a blessed day!

Today I am basically just going to piggyback onto last week's post about SEOs.  I receive tons of spammy-like emails  (I say "like" because I have signed up for them but they come in droves) about online business, technology, SEOs, eCommerce, etc. so when I get really busy they tend to end up in the trash bin with having only  glanced at them.

But lately I have been working hard at increasing my knowledge of SEOs so they are getting more than just a glance.  I have found that often with tough subjects you just have to keep reading, looking etc. and one day the light bulb turns on.  This worked for Statistics and Stoicheometry so I am telling myself it will work for SEOs.

WebCEO offers to analyze your site to see where you rank, how your effective your SEOs are, help you build the strength and health of your site and much more.  The best part? it is free!  The free version does offer you a lot of information so it is worth the time invested.

At this point I am impressed at all the information I have derived from the site and would recommend trying it if you are struggling with understanding SEOs as I have been.

Thank you and have a blessed day!

I have to admit that SEOs still confuse the heck out of me.  But the reality is, I need to earn more about them and so do you if you have a blog or eCommerce site.  I will not fake some extensive knowledge or profound information but what I will do is provide you a few links that I found extremely useful for us laymen.

The first sight is a blog that lays out the basics from Google's guide on SEOs but in a language most of us can easily digest .  www.techrepublic.com.  This article goes over how to create them and gives some links to use for checking the health of your site, etc.

Also, I just learned that there is such a thing as Negative SEOs.  We all know that for years companies (large and small) have used bogus social media accounts, blogs, etc to inflate their followers and interactions to make it seem that they are more important to the public than they truly are.  Why?  because it pushes their sites to the top of Google's search.  Unfortunately while Google tries to protect the user from bogus sites it may mean we get a red flag too without even knowing what we did.  Sometimes we did nothing and can be blocked because other's are either "helping us" or intentionally hacking into our accounts and creating redirects among other things.

Sites for Viagra, payday loans, porn etc. maybe creating page redirects we don't even know about.  Of course there are ways to monitor this and in another great post I found a few links to tools for this.  The nice thing, not only does the tools help monitor for intrusive sites and content but it can help me in monitoring some other stats. Reading this post was very helpful  http://moz.com/blog/preparing-for-negative-seo

Unfortunately for many of us (maybe most) our shops and blogs are not our only jobs.  We start out with this great idea and are inspired to go for our dreams and then find that everywhere we turn problems and more things we never would have thought we needed.  Since we do not have a large marketing staff or developers at our fingertips we will need to rely on good ole fashioned team work.  So please post any tips or links that you have found essential for your online health.

Thank you and have a blessed day!

After reading my post last September, Free to Promote... 25 (on Net Neutrality), you could imagine my relief when the FCC approved the policy to protect Net Neutrality.  But this win is bittersweet.

Even though I still think that Net Neutrality is a win for small businesses, I have always had a little voice in the back saying "but it's more government control."  Nothing can ever be black and white and I still support the decision but I must keep a watchful eye.

I found two great articles for more information; One is NPR's reporting on the decision and the other actually opposes Net Neutrality with some very good and valid rational.  NPR - FCC Approves Net Neutrality Rules for 'Open Internet'  and Forbes - Am I The Only Techie Against Net Neutrality?
