Aromatherapy Thursday - Lemongrass

These wonderful Lemongrass plants can be purchased from ETSY shop Allzeros at http://www.etsy.com/shop/allzeros?ref=seller_info
I have just become a proud owner of some Lemongrass plants.  A friend of mine has giving me some cuttings and they are sprouting like mad.  I love this herb because not only does it look pretty, it smells heavenly (just like lemons) and the aroma really uplifts my spirits in the gray winter months.  But not only is Lemongrass great for aromatherapy it is wonderful to cook with and in teas; this is one of the more versatile herbs that I have found.  Lemongrass is very mild and has a wonderful flavor of lemon that will pair very nicely with fish and chicken.  This herb is also thought to aid in digestion.

Topically Lemongrass has been used to treat large pores and improve scalp condition.  You can add a few drops of essential oil to your shampoos or body wash and mix well to benefit from these properties.  If you would rather purchase products that are rich in these oils and smell wonderful there are many available for sale at ETSY that are handmade.

Its aromatherapy properties is known to help with nerves and to ease stress.  I personally find this to be true as I package my lovely Sunny Lemon Grass Sachet mix I feel more calm and relaxed.
My sachet mix includes lemongrass, citrus peel and lemon verbena along with other dried botanicals
and essential oils for a bright sunny lemon scent.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/77902335/50-off-sale-handmade-sunny-lemon-grass
Aromatherapy can be as simple as adding a few drops of Lemongrass oil to a cotton ball to use in the car for travel or as complex as diffusing oil with multiple tones.  I like to keep things simple and often will use only one or two essential oils together.  Lemongrass paired with mandarin is a very refreshing and mood stabilizing fragrance.  Here are some other products from ETSY shops using Lemongrass that are handmade and absolutely beautiful.

As with any homeopathy and aromatherapy you should always consult your physician first, never use it in replace of medical treatment and do a allergy test before using.

Aromatherapy Thursday - Peppermint

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!  Many images come to mind for this special day:  Shamrocks, Pots of gold, Leprechauns, and Peppermint.  (Good lead in, yah?)
http://www.etsy.com/listing/67339131/vintage-postcard-st-patrick-harp-heart
Taking long car rides to new undiscovered places is such fun...for most people.  Unfortunately for a few or maybe many it is not fun.  Car sickness has not been one of my experiences although there have been times that I felt queasy due to an illness while riding in the car.  For those that have experienced that there may be a simple holistic means of reducing that sickening feeling.

It has been found that Peppermint will often help with car sickness.  I personally use it for when I am not feeling well and have nausea.  Simply having that wonderful minty freshness in the air around you can reduce the sick sensation.

Peppermint has other wonderful properties:  it can also ease headaches, help open up that stuffy feeling when you have a cold or sinus problem, sooth muscular pain when you use it as a rub, and it has mood altering affects.
Needless to say I am a strong advocate of aromatherapy.  Peppermint is extremely powerful for my moods.  If I am tired or in a slump as soon as I open a jar of my sachet and that wonderful aroma meets me I become more alert right away.  Peppermint has a reviving and mood boosting property along with helping to calm nerves.  Alert and Calm!!  Many of us would love that.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/69580535/antique-postcard-man-in-nightgown-in-bed
Just like in any aromatherapy caution must be used.  Pay attention to signs of allergies to specific smells and herbs, respect others that do have allergies because it can be very detrimental to their health, and never directly smell essential oils from the bottle (it can burn the mucous membrane) or use it directly on your skin (a variety of reactions can occur.)  Essential oils are very concentrated and can cause many negative affects if used "neat" or straight from the bottle.  Most all of them need to be mixed into a sachet, potpourri, bath product, or message oil.
One simple method of using peppermint oil in your car to ward off car sickness is to place a few drops on a cotton ball and set that cotton ball on your dash board or some other location that will allow it to fill the air with its minty freshness.  I sell a wonderful sachet mix that could easily be put into a pretty cloth bag or a simple muslin bag and used in the car or anywhere.  I use it to freshen my house after someone has had a bug or if I am tired.

I created this treasury for the love of mint.  Have a wonderful Alert and Calm Day

Aromatherapy Thursday - Jasmine

Last week we talked about Lavender and the relaxing affect it has on our mood, how it helps with sleep and has a calming effect on the mind. I just finished reading an article featured in a back issue of Martha Stewart Living August 2010 on the beautiful fragrance of Jasmine.

It is now known to be more affective in sleep aid and relaxation than Lavender. I am very fond of Lavender but I also adore Jasmine, it has sweet heady smell that reminds me of the gentle breeze of summer. There is no wonder in my mind how it works. To me nothing is more relaxing than those hot summer nights.

This ESTY Store Bohemian Beetnik is offering a 3 oz Jasmine Organic Coconut Cream
Deodorant all natural aluminum free
 and can be found at:

Some people are extremely sensitive to odors so it is always advisable to try very minute amounts until you are assured there will be no reaction. I am very sensitive to scent not due to allergies but in how they make me feel. Certain scents like Jasmine will quickly help my mind quiet and gives me a more positive, uplifted feeling.

In Aromatherapy Jasmine is noted for the following properties: positive effect on the female system, uplifting, aphrodisiac, relaxing and strong sensual stimulant.

Why not give Jasmine a try; purchase a simple inexpensive but quality soap, potpourri, and sachet or make one of these yourself. I don't know of anyone that couldn't use a good relaxing and restful night.
This wonderful Jasmine soap is made by Sweet Olive Soap Works found on ESTY at

http://www.etsy.com/shop/sweetolivesoapworks?ref=seller_info

In honor of the Jasmine Flower I created the following treasury. Please check out my fellow Estian's stores. They are wonderful crafters, collectors and artists.

Unfortunately Jasmine oils are not as inexpensive like the Lavender essential oil. But to receive the full benefit you will need to purchase pure essential oil of Jasmine flowers. It will be well worth it since the difference is so profound. You will most certainly be able to distinguish between the soft floral scent of the essential oil and the overly sweet heavy smell of the synthetic.

Aromatherapy Thursday

While working on my natural product line and realized how fitting the subject of aromatherapy is for my blog.  While you don't necessary collect aromatherapy it is a very important aspect of our homes.  I have been in homes beautifully decorated and very neatly organized but filled with stale air or unpleasant odors.  Not that it can always be avoided but what we smell can affects our moods dramatically.  Currently to my knowledge there is only one scent that has been studied using blind tests in a lab and that would be Lavender.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/67025618/handmade-relaxing-lavender-sachet-mix

Lavender is one of my favorite fragrances.  It is not only proven to help people relax and sleep but it smells pleasant.  It is a gentle oil that can be used in a variety of ways:  lotions, massage oils, room fragrances, perfumes, soaps and much more.  It also has aseptic properties meaning that it cleanses the air around it.
Dried Fragrant Lavender
To benefit from these special properties you must use items made with essential oils or that contain the natural herb itself.   Fragrant oils are synthetic, they will smell similar, but will not have all of the properties that an essential oil or herb has.  Essential oils are usually made through a process of distillation that will capture the oils from the actual plant.  These can be costly but are well worth it.
Most of my products will contain only or primarily essential oils.  I prefer to use the best quality available whenever possible.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/67615179/handmade-sachet-with-vintage-ceramic
So when you are feeling stressed or have a stressful period in life, remember the benefits of having the aroma of lavender in your space.  It can be as simple as having a cotton ball with a little oil on it or as luxurious as soaking in handmade sea salts.

Welcome to Butterfly In The Attic

Like my store vision, the visions for this blog is to create an avenue for individuals like myself to bring back some of the beauty and uniqueness to our world.  Most of us have become satisfied to ooh and ah or gasp at what we view on television, magazines or the internet and that is as far as we go.  We seem to have become a society that is satisfied to only see things from a distance and forget all about our other senses.  As simple as the act of collecting or having a collection seems, this one small hobby can stimulate many senses, entice an idol mind into thinking and can open doors to new experiences one leading into the next.
My store and this blog will be focused on those things that I have found great pleasure in since I was a child; my collections and my craft.   I was greatly blessed as a child with grandparents that found my intense fascination with “things” a gift and something to nurture.  My interests were wide and expansive at that time; from wanting to collect bugs (of all things) to rocks, buttons to postcards, lace to pressed flowers, postage stamps to nature seals and on and on...  Fortunately for myself I have narrowed it down a little; probably to some, very little.
I have collected postcards since my grandmother gave me my first antique German greetings.  Later I found that in every picture postcard was an escape, a message, and place that someday I must see for myself.
Haven't been here yet.
but...........
I have been to here.

As a child looking at this postcard during the wintery months in the Midwest I could only dream of visiting these places now I live on the West Coast.  Also important information to parents; postcard collecting, if presented in the right way, will keep your kids quiter for longer than any TV show or video game ;)

I love buttons, old and new; for such a simple item they can be created with such beauty, along with such a variety of materials and at one time you could identify a persons’ class status by the buttons on their clothes.  Now you can still determine someone’s class status; pant button done vs. pant button undone.  I find that often it is quite relaxing to match the many hundreds of buttons that I have and imagine what beautiful or handsome creations the new owners will create.

Gems and minerals have held a deep intrigue with me since I was young also.  It never seemed to fail that as a child I just happened to look down just at the right time and there would be the most gorgeous crystal or fascinating fossil at my feet.

Amethyst I had the great pleasure to have found.
Crafting with natural products brings me great joy.  They make me feel very connected to the natural world and are very spiritual.  I hope to help bring the same joy to others with my products.

A lovely Lavender Sachet Mix I create

Finally, but not the least by any manner of speaking, I love collecting anything vintage, pretty and those items that may simply be unique.   Unfortunately for our new generations and even beginning in mine, we have become a “throw-away” society.  Everything is made for a onetime use; it has no character, no energy, and no charm.  Yes I have become as accustomed to many of these conveniences as much as the next person but it is a real tragedy that most of us have no other reason to save a container or a razor other than to reduce the landfill.  Kudos to all of us that are conscious of that but what ever happened to the day when we would keep a coffee can just because it was pretty.  No wonder why we have to resort to building towns on top of dump sites.  Let the collectors of the world help bring the beauty back into our everyday lives.  Say good bye to the mundane one - use lighters, razors, and room freshener spray and hello to a reason to recycle.
While I have been a collector and crafter for years I am constantly searching for new knowledge and better ways to find treasures, preserve and organize them.  As I learn I want to share this information with you and to provide the readers with a positive source of information.  I would like to focus on the art of collecting along with the art of creating a positive living space and environment for ourselves.  Living in a clean and organized space but one that is full of intrigue and character.
Organizing is key because that is one way that we keep the line of distinguished collector and not find ourselves featured on the next episode of Horders.
Until next time... and don't forget to visit me at my store ButterflyInTheAttic. http://www.etsy.com/shop/ButterflyInTheAttic
