Antique Thanksgiving Postcards

Things are finally slowing down just a little at work so I have been blessed to have a few moments to list some of my antique postcards. I love the fall and so listing these amazing postcards is especially enjoyable for me. They would be great for a collection, display or to use in your holiday decorations.  I hope you get a chance to stop by my little shops and check out all of the new listings. Have a beautiful day.

Fortunately for me the wonderful folks at ETSY have featured my items in their beautiful treasuries. A very grateful thank you.

Aromatherapy Thursday - Chamomile

Grow Your Own!!!  Seeds found in ETSY shop Cubits at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/cubits?ref=seller_info
Chamomile is such a sunny dainty little flower that has a clean soothing scent.  It looks and smells like came straight from the summer sun.  I am particularly fond of Chamomile because it was the first "herb" I discovered growing wild in the Midwest fields.  Of course there are many kinds of Chamomile and typically those that we relate to aromatherapy are German, Roman, and English Chamomile.  Their fragrances are more delicate than the wild Chamomile I found.
These dried flowers can be used to make your own wonderful relaxing blends.  Found in ETSY shop Herbal Sunshine at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/herbalsunshine?ref=seller_info
Chamomile is heralded for its soothing properties not only through aromatherapy but in teas.  It is often used to sooth stomach aches and noted for calming the nervous digestive tract.
This scrumptious Chamomile Tea can be found in ETSY shop Spirit Horse Herbals at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/spirithorseherbals?ref=seller_info
In aromatherapy no other pair seems more natural as Lavender and Chamomile; Lavender aides in sleep and relaxation while Chamomile provides an additional soothing property.
This relaxing combination can be found in ETSY shop Skinplicity at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/Skinplicity?ref=seller_info
Using these two wonderful herbs together can be as simple as adding 3 drops of Chamomile oil and 2 drops of Lavender oil into 2 Teaspoons of vegetable or grape seed oil.  Because of their clean scents, many other oils, such as Bergamot, can be easily added for additional "tones” creating a little more complex aroma.  Using this same combination you can treat yourself to a relaxing bath.
This wonderful Organic Herbal Bath Soak can be found in ETSY shop Organic Pagan at http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThyLocalOrganicPagan?ref=pr_shop
Chamomile has also been noted to add special shine to a person's hair.  Used alone steeped as a strong tea it, can be used as a rinse to highlight blonde hair.  But it can also be used in companion with other herbs and ingredients to bring out highlights for anyone and it will give your hair a beautiful luster.   (My mother never let me color my hair so finding that large patch of wild Chamomile was extra important to me as a teen.)

This wonderful Herbal Rich Hair Oil was found in ETSY shop Brown Butter Beauty at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/ChristineGant?ref=seller_info

To Chamomile the flower that makes you smile...

Remember to always check for allergies prior to using any essential oil or aromatherapy product.  Use the patch test as described in my blog post, Aromatherapy Thursday - Lavender.  Also note that aromatherapy is to enhance and bring enjoyment to a person's life and never to be substituted for medical care with your physician.  If you are a pregnant woman or if you are planning to use aromatherapy on a child you should check with your physician first.

We Are Relocating and That Means Moving Sale!!!

My family and I have decided to relocate within the state, Yeah!, but this is a BIG state!  So the distance still is significant and I would love to sell as many items from two of my stores as I can before the big day.  I will be able to knock out two projects at once; reduce inventory to give everyone something new to look at next month and lighten my load a little.

I have made two treasuries one is featuring some of my handmade items and one that is featuring some of my vintage items.  What I would love would be that anyone who blogs, FB, tweets, etc to post this sale everywhere.  Please with sugar on top.

Hand Giveaways Post and Great Treasuries

Well here we are at Sunday and many of us are winding down the weekend.  I would like to ask everyone to check out the Hand Giveaways Post and click on each item.  For every 50 clicks that people make the participants (myself included) have additional opportunity to have at winning an advertising spot.  Also if you are an Etsian yourself there is still time to add your handmade item to the group.  Lots of fun.

Aulani

Here are some of the newest treasuries that I have had the honor of being included in:
It is always fun to see what other shops are doing.  They sell just about everything on ETSY so I have been finding myself ordering more and more of my everyday needs there.  I am especially hooked on the lip balms due to the dry West Coast air.  But I must say their jewelry and bath products are also phenomenal!

This one features my Vintage Amber Goblets...

Features my beautiful Antique Easter Postcard...

These are some of the fun BNR that are currently running.  Please stop by and check them out and look for our special promotions that many of us are offering. My offer is good throughout my shop.

A Love Story - The Squirrel, A Cat, and Me

I am not sure where my delusion all began but I am in love with squirrels.  Their cute little pudgy body is just screaming to me "Hug Me."  It doesn't start here but it definitely was a pivotal point in my crazy squirrel affair.
Sweet little squirrels found in ETSY Shop Val World at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/valworld?ref=seller_info

On my last trip to the Midwest we spent time in a remote hilly forest that was actually a tough course of disc golf.  While waiting for my son to finish a hole I kept hearing a strange sound.  It sounded almost like someone plucking a rubber band but more scratchy.  I investigated and found the noise to be coming from a tree.  I looked closer and became excited when I discovered the sound came from the plumpest little squirrel chewing on a nut.  He was in the branch slightly above my reach he was so intent on his project that he didn’t seem to notice me; at first.  With camera in hand I approached slowly.  His head lifted slightly to watch me while continuing to chew on his nut.

I inched closer taking a picture and closer taking another.  I was thinking all the while about how sweet he looked and how I would love to scoop him up and cuddle him.  But having been raised in the country I knew not to, but oh how tempting...  I continued to inch forward, the squirrel stopped and then continued to gnaw at the nut keeping a good eye on me.  At this point I had convinced myself that maybe I could get closer even yet, right below the branch.  He is so sweet... so cute...until…

He sprung up squeaking, nut still in his mouth, tiny little hands stretched out in anger for my disturbing his peace.  Of course that didn't stop me yet.  I continued to take pictures up close and personal like a deranged paparazzi.  I’m snapping photos faster and faster as the squirrel is becoming angrier and angrier.  Then he jumped to the main trunk of the tree and stuck his upper body out as if to lunge.

At this point the temptation faded and images of cuddling a squirrel left, replaced by images from Chevy Case's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.  I envisioned the squirrel leaping from the tree to my chest in one swift motion and I decided to back off.  I left, his angry squeaks echoing through the forest behind me.

I have learned, my friends, that I should stick to cats.  They are just as pudgy and soft and they don't bite...Usually.

My New Discovery on ETSY

I just discovered what they call BNR and BNS treasuries. These treasuries are wonderful fun for sellers and buyers alike. I have bought an item from each of the treasuries I am proud to post below and then they add one of my items to the treasury. I have purchased two pieces of jewelry, some homemade lip balm and some Lilac Soap. Please tweet, FB or convo these for me. Stop by each and leave a comment, I appreciate the support and I am sure the other shop owners will appreciate the feedback and sales too. I am really excited about this new opportunity (I am sure you can tell.) Hope to see you there.

Happy Easter! Welcome Spring & Rebirth!

Easter is my favorite holiday even over Christmas.  While I love Christmas, to me Easter is such an obvious sign of rebirth and new life.  I have always been very in tune with nature, so when we are struggling through the dark cold winters I get an overwhelming feeling that the earth is void and its life gone.  Then at Easter a warm breeze and a refreshing rain awakens everything and I see the natural world come back to life.

For Christians and those of similar beliefs this is also the day to celebrate Christ's rising from the dead.  It is the perfect time of year to celebrate His rebirth since all things around us are coming alive once again and you can feel the dawn of a new cycle of life.  I have so many things to be grateful for and I am especially grateful for our Savior’s precious sacrifice.
While many say that the Easter egg hunts, bunnies, and chicks mask the true meaning of Easter, I disagree.  I believe that these are things that symbolize the rebirth and resurrection of our Savior and therefore are to be celebrated.  The butterfly is the symbol of the resurrection (reincarnation); eggs, chicks and baby bunnies are the signs of rebirth; and the cute little lamb is the symbol of our Shepherd and the Lamb of God.
So, I am very excited for this special day in my life and appreciate all the visual cues and symbols around me.  Whether you are of similar faith or believe differently I hope that you enjoy all of these beautiful treasures that we have around us and the sign of new things to come.

Happy Easter Everyone!!!

Stormy Weather - Song Lighting Crashes by Live

It is funny what will trigger a song and a memory.  I was working and stopped by one of the teams I belong to and found a challenge.  The person starting the thread created a treasury based on a theme and presents the first challenge theme and the next follows suite.  Mine was to create a treasury based on Stormy Weather which of course triggered memories of the song Lighting Crashes by Live.  Even if you do not like heavier music the lyrics are beautiful with rich meaning about the circle of life.  The transfer of one life as the body passes and leaves on to another as they are newly born.

Live Lyrics - Lightning Crashes

I hope you enjoy the video and the treasury:

Please note that I will not have computer access for a week but will be back soon.   I will miss my Blog friends.

The Aniversary of The Titanic

This amazing print on canvas was created by an artist that has a family history from the Titanic.
I found his shop, Painting Ports, at http://www.etsy.com/shop/PaintingPort?ref=seller_info
On April 10, 1912 over 2000 people boarded the largest ship built for a luxurious trip overseas from Southampton, England to New York.  The ship was boasted as "unsinkable" constructed with the newest technology and the protection of the double skinned hull.  The ship was a floating luxury hotel; it had fine dining, a gymnasium, saloons, a library, and much more.  The ship was staffed with over eight hundred employees to cater to the passengers every need, except of course one.
Found in ETSY ShopBooze Hound Artworks at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/boozehoundartworks?ref=seller_info
The ship stops in Cherbourg the same day and Queenstown the next, where more passengers board and then the Titanic crew sets course unaware of the fate that lay before them.  April 14, 1912 the "unsinkable" ship hits an iceberg around midnight.  They built this ship for luxury and speed and spent much effort lavishing their guests with the best that money could buy but overlooking something, in hindsight, seems so basic.  The creators of the Titanic, so confident that this ship was truly unsinkable, did not provide their guests with the simplest comp; enough lifesaving boats.
Amazing antique map found at ETSY Shop Banana Strudel at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/bananastrudel?ref=seller_info
In the early hours of April 15th the band played as the Titanic, along with all but just over seven hundred of passengers and crew, meet their fate at the bottom of the frozen ocean.  Survivors clinging to life, the situation surreal, most likely unbelieving what had just happened even as they are wet and exposed to the elements.

This sad tragedy has had an impact on people for decades upon decades.  Many, including myself, that have no personal connection to this event continue to be fascinated by the details and carry the memories of those lost onto the next generation.  Perhaps it is partly due to the lavish manor that the ship was built along with the wealth of some and the mystery of others that were aboard but also due to the irony that the "unsinkable" ship met its demise on its maiden voyage.
This beautiful Antique Dress was found at ETSY Shop Pretty In Prague at http://www.etsy.com/shop/prettyinprague?ref=seller_info
Although this event had such great loss it has been the inspiration for many beautiful stories based on memoirs and accounts from survivors.  The latest movie about the Titanic was one that rejuvenated the interest for younger generations and created a new wave of romanticizing this period in history.  I too romanticize about the beauty and grace of the women from that period, the gentlemen dressed so dashingly and the luxuries that were found on that ship.

Antique 1st edition book on the Titanic found at ETSY Shop New Life Wood Works at  http://www.etsy.com/shop/NewLifeWoodWorks?ref=seller_info
The following treasuries are created with inspiration from remembering the beauty and tragedy of the Titanic.

Childhood Memories

Often as a child I was told not to put too much value on material things.  Although I agree it is not good to put an emphasis on material things over people, what I found was that it wasn't the item so much as the memories attached to the item.  It could have been the plainest thing you ever saw but if it came from my Grandpa, Grandma or my Uncle it was a cherished treasure.  They were special people in my life so even if it was a card, a flower, or the gift wrap I wanted to save it.  I am sure that I am not the only person that feels that way because I found things that my children have saved that surprises me but to them it is a treasure.  So I went on a search for images of items from many generations all the way up to my children's childhood that were a meaningful part of our lives and maybe yours too.
I am so excited I found this item from Shane's Treasure Chest.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/ShanesTreasureChest?ref=seller_info
Now here is a funny image for you: this is exactly like the one I had growing up and I would ride it while I watched Star Trek (the original with William Shatner, who I had a crush on, FYI)  I would ride it as fast as I could trying to get to warp speed.  I'm blushing as I write this but I would do it again if I could!

Found in ETSY Shop Fresh Retro Gallery at  http://www.etsy.com/shop/FreshRetroGallery?ref=seller_info
These are from my childhood too.  They were the real Pix-up Stix not those phony blunted plastic ones.  I never poked my eye out because people made sure I didn't run around with them.  I miss the wood ones.
Found on ETSY Shop Abe's Basement at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/AbesBasement?ref=seller_info
One from my husband's favorites.  He loves the Green Hornet (the original with Jackie Chan.)

Found at ETSY Shop Retro Reaction
http://www.etsy.com/shop/RetroReaction?ref=seller_info
I had this exact game.  I remember being really unsure about the images on one hand they were intriguing on the other hand the heads bothered me.  My daughter loved to play Old Maid too.  But she always wanted to be the Old Maid and would cheat to get it; giggling the entire time she was doing it.  She wasn't very good at being sneaky.
Found on ETSY Shop Old School Productions at http://www.etsy.com/shop/OldSkoolProductions?ref=pr_shop_more
Wow!!! Another great find.  I so wanted this set growing up...I loved Star Wars.
Found on ETSY Shop Bargain Mom Of 3 at
 http://www.etsy.com/shop/bargainmomof3?ref=seller_info
My daughter loved Strawberry Shortcake but she fell right in between the time when they first came out and when they started making the reproductions.  So I would search every garage sale I could for these sweet smelling little babies.  They really made them well because they usually still smelled like strawberry.
Found on ETSY Store Happy 2 See U at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/happy2seeu?ref=seller_info
OK one more from my childhood.  When I found this I had to add it.  I was older when the new technology of Scratch n' Sniff stickers came out but wow did I love them.  They were so cool and "so out of this world!"

From ETSY Shop Sew Busy B at http://www.etsy.com/shop/sewbuzyb?ref=seller_info
My son was torn between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Biker Mice From Mars.  Eventually the Mutants won.
Once again there were too many wonderful items to include in this post so I created a couple treasuries with more.  I found so many things that I can remember one of us playing with or talking about.

If I were a kid again...

Tooting My Own Horn This Friday

Good Friday Morning.  In honor of surviving a really long week I decided to be a little self centered and show off some of my favorite postcards from my store Postcards In The Attic.  I created a treasury featuring all of the illuminated night scene postcards that I have.  They vary quite a bit from age some from the early 1900's and one as young as the 70's or 80's.  They also vary in what kind they are some are Litho, some are Linen, and the youngest of the group is the traditional kind that we see today.  I do think they are lovely and they really make me feel like traveling even at this age.  I hope you enjoy.  Happy Friday Everyone!!!

Aromatherapy Thursday - Tea Tree

I have noticed as I am out and about many people with the sniffles.  At this time of year I find more susceptible to catching many nasty little bugs and often the air in rooms and around me feels sick.  Tea Tree is a wonderful plant that has a long history as a tea, antifungal, and as a treatment for many different things that require antiseptics.  In fact it is history that Captain Cook used it to fight the scurvy in his crew on their voyages.
Aromatherapy, of course, focuses is on the plant's effect on a person when they use the plant's essential oils and aroma.
Tea Tree has a pleasant earthy scent that is fresh and clean.  I personally love the scent of tea tree and find it to be very helpful when I am not feeling well.  It is known to be the strongest disinfectant so if used in your "sick" room it does really help clear out the air.  Often when not feeling well I will simply add a few drops to a diffuser or vaporizer and place it in the main rooms of my home.  This is also good after someone in your home has been sick to clear out those bugs from the air and freshen up your home.
Most of us have experienced the Vicks Vapor rub as a child.  I personally hated it; the greasy paste smelled so strong it burned and felt ice-cold against my feverish skin.  Not to say it doesn't work but I much prefer my own mixture now that I am an adult.  Using sweet almond oil as a carrier (or if you don't have that readily available you can used vegetable oil) add four drops of tea tree oil with one drop of lavender essential oil to two tablespoons of carrier oil.  Use as a rub on the same areas you would use Vicks: the chest, neck and back. It has wonderful properties that sooth and helps fight the bugs you have.
Most people are not sensitive to the Tea Tree oil, it is a more gentle oil that can be used "neet" like Lavender, but there are always people that are sensitive.  So an allergy test should always be conducted prior to using any essential oil.  Place a small drop of the oil on the wrist and check for any reddening or reaction for 24 hours.  Of course if there is a reaction or reddening do not use.  Always be conscious of those that have respiratory issues whenever using aroma therapy, what may help some people can increase another's health issues.  And by no means should aromatherapy take the place of medical treatment prescribed by your physician or take the place of a doctor's visit.

I have include a wonderful treasury of many products offered on ETSY that contain Tea Tree Oil.

Postcard Collecting And Postcard Artists

Often I hear novice postcard collectors tell me that they collect Tuck.  These postcards are published by Ralph Tuck and Sons in the late 1800s until somewhere around 1920.   I have wrote in other postings about specializing postcard collections by type, subject, publisher, or some other interest and collecting Tuck postcards is a wonderful means to specialize.
A collection that has a specific theme should allow the collector to become an expert in that area but unfortunately often I have found that people simply believe that because it is a Tuck it has significant monitary value.  There are many factors that will influence the monetary value of a postcard, including those published by Tuck: condition, rarity, subject matter, the colors used, and the artist play a huge role in what the value of these postcards can be.
Condition would be a consideration with this Vintage Tuck Card (I still like it though)

A wonderful example of how much one little element can change a value of a postcard is the Tuck Christmas series.  An early Tuck Christmas postcard depicting a Santa in a green suit (all other factors aside) will have a monetary value significantly higher than those that have Santas wearing the traditional red suit.  So in short collecting a specific publisher is an excellent choice but understanding the differences within that publisher's work will be important.
Some Tuck postcards will have a signature of the artist on the front of the postcard.  Signatures are not common for postcards no matter how amazing the artwork is.  Artists were a key to the picture postcards but many either didn't see them as something that would take off with the public and would fizzle out or they didn't see the postcard as important art.  For many reasons artists had found it not important to sign their postcard art but a hundred or more years later many of us postcard enthusiasts would like to argue with that.
There are several postcards that do have artist signature or their logo so you would be able to build a rather nice collection around this theme.  You could choose cards from specific artists only or collect cards that have the artist's actual signature.  I have included a link to a wonderful site that will help with finding artist names since there are too many for me to list in this posting.
Sometimes an artist's signature is very easily recognizable but others you will literally need a jewelers glass to figure it out who it is and even then it may be too hard to distinguish.  One of the easiest means to find specific artists is to look for those that had developed their own logo.  Many are very eye catching and easy to spot.  There are times that the publisher will also give credit to the artist printing their name somewhere on the card.  The actual artist signature, of course, is the most desirable to collectors.

This signature is one that I was not able to read even with a jeweler's glass

Cards that have a copyright date along with a name can be easily misidentified.  This may be the artists name but unless you are familiar with the artist you will need to research it.  Publishing companies and printers who did not actual create the art may have put their logo or name there instead.  I have example of a card done by the artist Max Feinberg that has his name right next to the 1911 copyright.

This one has Feinberg's name next to the copyright so you
know who the artist is  but it doesn't have his signature

I have some examples of Colby postcards from the early 1900s.  As you will see these cards have a distinct artist style but also a beautiful unmistakable logo and signature

One artist that has caused quite a stir was Donald McGill a British artist who is known for creating controversial (for the time period) postcards.  He would often create postcards that poked fun of the British government which did not gain him favor and he also liked comic caricature of people in scandalous situations or poses.  His cards were named Seaside cards because the subjects were often saucy seaside images.  I have examples of this artist along with others that have similar risqué artistry.  Although controversial in his period, many people collected McGill cards, which make them easier to find now.  He was a very clever artist at times.
This one is an example of his political cartoons
Walt Munson (as you will see) also liked to create those "saucy" cards.

This is a Spanish artist that I am not familiar with but it is signed just the same.  I do not speak or read Spanish so that doesn't help but in the postcard collecting world it would be necessary to pick up many languages if you wanted to be able to read them.  Fortunately for us Google has a wonderful feature to translate languages.  While this will not help with names it certainly help you figure out the origins of your card and often what the verse or caption says.   You go to Google and right alongside the search box there is a language tool.  Then type in the letters as you see them on the postcard.  Sometimes I have had to try several different languages because I am not sure exactly which one I am looking for but when I click on one that translates it to English I know that is it.  I don't think they could have made it simpler for us.  Of course it is not perfect but I find it to be an extremely useful tool.

One of my favorite postcards that has a known artist is listed at PostcardsInTheAttic on ETSY.  I love this card because I find it to be so beautiful and picturesque.  James Walter Gozzard was born in the late 1800's and was known for painting village scenes and his fine art.  Fortunately for us he also made some of his art into postcards.  This specific card has his name at the bottom as J.W. Gozzard but it is not actually signed.

I am not an expert on postcards but I enjoy sharing some of things I learn.  I rely heavily on researching my cards using books and internet sites.  Most often when I am listing a postcard for sale I learn something new because I won't recognize the artist or publisher and have to do some searching for information.  Hopefully this link and the others will make this process a little easier for you.
