The "X" is actually from the postcard itself and it dates in the early 1900's.
It wasn't to abbreviate the word or take Christ out of Chrismas but to signify the cross that Jesus died on.
I know that it is popular to believe that this was a modern day abbreviation but I started doing research on it because many of my antique Christmas Cards have the Xmas on it.
