Flashback Thursday; Life In America - Ruddy's General Store Museum

One of the things that I absolutely love about living in Palm Springs is the history.  It has such a rich (literally and figuratively) past that can be visited through museums, memorials and simply throughout the area itself.  You can visit the walk of the stars by simply shopping downtown, learn about the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians at the local museum and much more.

Terry and I visited a small section of museums right in Downtown Palm Springs cozily tucked within the multitude of lovely shops and restaurants.  My favorite in this section was Ruddy's General Store Museum.  It is the actual size of an old fashioned general store from the 1930s, complete with wood floors and the classic signage that you would have seen during that period.

As you enter the store you are greeted by a very knowledgeable and friendly woman, who will give you the great history of the shop.  The general store is a result of one man's private collection.  Jim Ruddy created this wonderful experience by purchasing a Midwest museum and combining with his collection of 35 years.  Between the two he developed the most complete collection housed in an authentic general store for the public to travel back to the 1930s.

Ruddy's General Store Museum is a "must see" in Palm Springs; make sure you set aside some time to visit (address and information is at the bottom of this post)

Members Of The Pacific Postcards Team - Series 74

Welcome to the Pacific Postcards Team Meet and Greet.  We have a great team that had start simply as an Etsy Team but has branched out into Artfire, G+FacebookTwitter and Pinterest.  We would love for you to join are team and help promote New Artistically designed or reproduced postcards, collecting vintage and antique postcards, creating digital art, and anything to do with ephemera and vintage imagery.

First I would like to introduce myself, Colleen (Captain) and Frances (Leader) of the team:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/postcardsintheattic

"First a brief little introduction: I grew up a Midwest farm girl from Wisconsin but through a series of moments of self discovery I have since moved to California and live the city life in the Palm Springs area.  I live in a lovely contemporary home where my husband and I have designed a small but very beautiful Japanese Garden.

Unfortunately, though, the contemporary look does not blend with my passion for vintage and antique Victorian froufrou.  So I have created for myself a virtual world with my shops.  I welcome you to my attic filled with all the treasures found and creations made especially for you..." ~Colleen Cornelius

https://www.etsy.com/shop/MyArtPlace
"I create mixed media, collage, folk art, religious icons, jewelry with a twist, paintings & digital art. Frida Kahlo has long been my muse and some of my art is inspired by her colorful life and paintings. I also enjoy dressing up in costume for any occasion but especially for Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos celebrations and of course as Frida.

Hunting for treasures at flea markets, thrift stores and antique shops is also a favorite past time and I often incorporate these objects into my art..." ~Frances Perea

"Paper has always attracted me and turning them into beautiful projects is always a delight. I have been quilling for over 8 years. Over the years it has grown on me more after I had 2 boys, a husband & a full-time job. The urge to return to my craft became stronger and hence PaperSimplicity was born. Each product is made with love, patience and care and gives me immense pleasure in making and displaying in my shop and hope to spread the same pleasure with you." ~Abhilasha

Free to Promote Your Shop, Social Sites, or Blog; on Networking Saturday 31

Are you a Leader or are you a Follower?
From shop
For me it is Easy, I've been in management for years, do public speaking, etc I was always the kid that lead the pack and was deemed "stubborn" by many adults.  For me being a leader came naturally; I will lead you even if I have know clue where I am going (I've caught myself literally doing this.)
From shop
So as you are reading the last statement I am sure you can see how having to always be the lead can be a shortcoming, just like always having to be the follower can have its short comings.

My leadership skills work very well for me in my career as a Manager, but in my virtual world of handmades and vintage it can be an hindrance.  What I have been finding lately is that I am often recreating the wheel.

I love to think of new and more innovative ways for us to promote ourselves but I've been so busy doing that, that I didn't notice some of the great tools and resources around me.  So this week I've been spending more time looking through FB and Pinterest to see what I have been missing and have found several great group boards and one awesome and effective group on FB, Etsy - Helping Etsians Promote.

Etsy - Helping Etsians Promote run several promotional games, have over 4000 members and are very active.  I am completely enjoying being a member and Not the leader :)

While it is good to be a leader it is also good to be a follower at times and the message in this story is that you should stretch your limits and move out of your comfort zone so that you can grow as a person and business.
