Inspirational Sunday Party; Hi-ho, Silver, away

Inspiration can come from Reminiscing:
A perfect example of succesful marketing to kids.  This was my favorite gum, not because of the actual gum but because of the commercials.  I hated the gum it tasted like lemon flavored paste LOL
This great flash-back was posted on FB by

Remember the Lone Range?  I loved my adventure shows when I was really little.  I always wanted to be the Hero, it didn't matter that they were boys; I made my family call me Tarzan for a year before switching to Superman. Another great memory posted on FB by

"My mother calls me 'Colleen' But YOU can call me the LONE RANGER!" "Hi-ho, Silver, away!"

Counting Down with Frosty The Snowman & Friends

Some of my Favorite Holiday Memories were when CBS would broadcast their holiday cartoon specials.  I grewup in a time where kid's shows were only on a couple of hours on Saturday mornings and during the holidays.  It made it so much more exciting to have to wait to see these classics.  They still make me feel like a kid again every time I watch them.  I hope you enjoy:)

Saturday's Shameless Self Promotion

Crafts and art projects were always a meaningful part of my life as I grew up.  I think my love of buttons and old sewing supplies had been nurtured by the long hours I spent searching through both of my grandmother's sewing boxes and fabrics.  I was very blessed to have such patient grandmothers since it must have been a big nuisance to bring out these large box just for me to dig through.  I imagine that even though I remember being careful they had to go back rearrange the mess I left.

I was only about 4 or 5 years old when I started dreaming of big projects I would make once I was old enough to have my own supplies.  And now that I am grown I do have my own supplies but they are kept in plastic bins and organizers; unlike the very ornate and decorative sewing boxes I remember from my youth.

From TheCherryChic at http://ow.ly/dyP3S
Now that my children are grown I haven't machine stitched anything in years.  Although my poor husband has not seen me sew anything since we met, I will not part with my sewing machine; it still looks like new and it took me years to be able to afford such a treasure.  I had bought it right before I went back to school and my life became much more complex and busy. Prior to that I used a literal antique singer that worked beautifully for simples stitches but weighed about 50 pounds and could only go forwards and backwards.  I do miss the heavy monster because there is definitely something to be admired about that design; it was a work of beauty and art when they created those old machines.

While I don't sew I still love to carry old sewing supplies in my shop.  It gives me a chance to hang on to a few wonderful childhood memories of old coffee cans filled with buttons, piles of fabric and fancifully decorated sewing boxes with their mysterious hidden compartments.  I hope that my items will excite the creativity in you too.

Freaky Funny Friday - TGIF Let's Just Have Fun! - I Miss Laverne & Shirley

I stumble across a Laverne & Shirley Reunion this morning on Yahoo and realized wow!!! Do I miss real entertaining TV.   I know it makes me sound ancient but I grew up with shows like Laverne & Shirley.  Since it was filmed in Milwaukee (right around the corner) it gave me hope and inspiration that there was more to life than milking cows and country lanes.

My up bringing was in a very conservative home where women didn't work outside the house and their future plans were to get married (and obey.)  The only acceptable career aspiration for someone without the holy Y chromosome was to be a mother.  We were not rich enough to dream about going to college and finding a husband; no, your choices were your neighbor's son (the farmer) or the guy at church, who maybe (if you were lucky) had a profession, something like a plumber.  If those two didn't cut it, our you didn't cut it for them, then you may become the dreaded "spinster."  But fortunately for me I was little in the 70's and shows like Laverne & Shirley gave me the hope that I needed.

I wasn't allowed to watch the show because of it's raciness but often I would sneak down and sit on the stairs to watch or possibly whine enough so that I could at least catch part of the week's episode.  It showed me that these two women were able to make it on their own, be happy, date (without falling straight to the pits of hell) and have all kind of amazing adventures right in my home state making me realize that I didn't have to end up a farmer's wife.  No disrespect to farm wives anywhere; it is just that it is sooooooo much work and I didn't want to do it.  I wanted to be where the action was, the excitement was and I wanted to be OK if I decided not to get married.  Unfortunately as fate would have I did get married (and divorced) young anyway but I have to give some credit to the influence of 70's pop culture for the path I took to get where I am now.  I am independent and I do have a career and I do live in a city where things are always happening (not quite the crazy antics that you would see on the show but sometimes it could be close.)

The thing is, when I was growing up I was constantly told that I could be only one thing in life but with shows like Laverne & Shirley, Mary Tyler Moore & Happy Days, it showed me that I could be basically be anything I wanted and still have a bright future.  Unfortunately I do not see that in today's television, often this generation is being shown images of people halfway killing themselves to do stupid pranks or sitting on a fake island somewhere pretending to be a "Survivor" or swearing and cussing in Jersey while doing beer bongs.  I hope that some day soon they will go back to producing things that are entertaining while still teaching young people that life can be fun and exciting with out the negative drama.  Show them something we would want them to aspire to be; don't teach them that it is alright and normal for a young lady to get in bar fights.  Laverne & Shirley may not have been exactly who you would want to have your kids growing up to be but they at least they were not a 14 year old mother-to-be in the middle of literal soap opera life; now that is what I hope my grand kids look up to, Not!

Oh Well at least we have reruns and YouTube, enjoy....

Wandering Wednesday - Saint Augustine Florida

St.Augustine Florida is a popular tourist town that many people will excitedly exclaim "oh I've been there, I love that place" if brought up in conversation.  It has a very very rich Spanish history and the buildings to prove it.  I absolutely love St. Augustine but for a more personal reason.

In 2002 my daughter, Ashley, turned 13 years old but before that, since about 8 years old, she would have hundreds of drop seizures every day; all day and all night.  While drop seizures are not as well know as grand mall seizures I honestly think that hers were more disruptive because it had caused at least an ER visit every week with something needing to get stitched up.  Unfortunately for her she spent a lot of time in wheel chairs and scooting around to get things so that she wouldn't fall down and get severely injured.  If you can imagine how hard it was to see her want to walk, run and play like any normal kid and she had the ability to do so, but she simply could not because no sooner than she got up she would collapse to the ground.

During those tough years I almost lost her on 4 different occasions because, for whatever reason, she would have a few episodes of seizures that would cause her to completely stop being able to take in a breath.  First responders would have to bag her and I would watch helplessly while she was being rescued.  Just like many people, our family was going through a time where we had a lot of stress.  I could go on to many details of the struggles but it is much too long of a story.
Wally and Ashley (before Ashley started to have drop seizures)
What was special about 2002 was that after trying special diets, every medication combination under the sun and all kinds of other treatments she was going to have brain surgery, a complete corpus callosotomy.  I was terrified that if we didn't do it she would have no quality of life and may die and if we did do it she may have no quality of life and may die.  Fun times.  So in light of never having had taken a real family trip during my poor children's entire life and this may be my last chance, I decided to take them to Disney World and on the way a stop in Saint Augustine.  I had no money but when a mother is feeling the way I did you find a way to make things happen and with her neurologist's blessing we were on our way.
Ashley's 13th Birthday
I had never been to Florida or really too far out of the Midwest so this was exciting but scary to take Ashley so far away from the security of home and doctors.  At this point she was in the wheel chair 90% of the time, so we made special little trailer for it and strapped it on to the back of our Green '99 Mercury Mystique that Ashley named Green Eggs and Ham. We were completely packed in with a weeks worth of supplies and we hit I90 ready for our 1700 mile trip.  Just outside of Maustin Wisconsin I heard my son, Wally, say "Are we there yet?"  I knew it was going to be a long ride.

After a long ride we finally made it to St. Augustine and found our hotel on the beach.  It was the first time that I had seen the ocean this was such a moving moment for me.  I had always dreamed of travelling, especially to the ocean shores, and for a long time it looked like I was never going to get a chance to.  As I brought the kids out to the beach for the first time I noticed that I had not planned for off roading with Ashley's wheel chair.  No matter how hard I tried I could not maneuver her chair through the sand.  So I took a deep breath, folded it up and put it along side the rail.  Then taking Ashley's hand we ventured out to the water's edge and she fell.  But to my surprise she did not get hurt and there was no blood or no broken stitches from the last injury, she just looked shocked and got up.

The sand was soft enough that she wouldn't get so banged up if she did fall.  It was the first time in years where Ashley could actually play like a normal kid and I didn't have to feel like I was a cat ready to spring in action at any sign of falling.  The entire time that we were on the beach Ashley was free.  Her brother and her spent many hours jumping waves and discovering treasures along the shore.  When it came time to leave St Augustine they begged to stay longer.  Needless to say once we arrived in Disney World they were very happy we left but that moment of peace in Saint Augustine will always be a treasured memory.
Ashley and Wally (Ashley standing safely on her own with her brother was a special occassion)
It is amazing to look back and see all of the miracles that God provided for us over the years and during our trip He certainly gave us many. Ashley had very few seizures and the ones she did have were more manageable then normal.  It was a trip that will always out shine any other trip in my life.  Ashley had the surgery succesfully reducing her seizures significantly so that she could leave her wheel chair behind.  She has good days and bad days where she may need to use one for power shopping through a store, but over all life is much better for her.  Ashley is grown up and happily lives with other adults with special needs.  Wally is also an adult and has was just married to a beautiful Utah girl.

Not only did God give me and my children the strength to get through a very tough time He gave us great beauty and happiness amid the stress and tourmoil.  One of those blessings was found on the shores of Saint Augustine.
Disney World Heals All Broken Hearts!

It was nice to see them smile and to be able to act like kids

Bloom County Kind of Day

Bloom County by Berke Breathed was my favorite comic strip growing up.  I was into world affairs and politics at a young age so the characters and the funny insights appealed to me directly.  Since I have not been feeling well I have had a minute to reflect on what is missing in my life now that I am grown and I have come to the conclusion it is Bloom County.  I miss my Opus and so I have decided to add a little "Penguin Lust" back into my life.  I hope you them enjoy as much as I do.

Wish Lists and Letters To Santa

While I was growing up letters to Santa were a must if you were going to be guaranteed any in put on your Christmas gifts.  As soon as I was told that it was time to make the list it was as if the starting gun went off.  Making the list meant that Christmas was on its way!  Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and everyone that I hadn't seen for months will be busily chatting around the family table soon.  We would be baking Christmas cookies and singing carols in no time.  Decorations and street lights will be going up soon and day dreaming would become a irresistible pastime.  It was a chance to dream of grandeur; Santa would get my letter and list and I would have wrote it so well that he would cheerful bring me every last toy and trinket on it.
At that time the Sears catalog was still huge and both they and JcPenny would print their Christmas series called the Wish Book.  These brightly colored books were amazing; hundreds of pages covered in pictures of every toy you could imagine.  Even if it wasn't a toy the item intrigued me because at that time we didn't really have super stores.  Many of the featured items could only be purchased through the catalog so they were unique and never seen on the store shelves.  As a small child it was easier to believe that Santa brought your gifts because there were no Walmart emblems on the packaging.

Once I was blessed with having my own children I always asked them to make a letter to Santa and their own Christmas list.  Gone were the days of thick dreamy catalogs but there were so many other stores contributing to the clutter of advertising that I would be able to gather together a pretty impressive pile of magical fliers.  When they were too little to write out everything I would help them with the letter and then give them scissors and glue.  Their little collages would be choppy and hard to make out at times but most of the time it sent a clear excited message; Christmas is coming!
It seems that many kids do not make Christmas lists or even write letters to Santa any more.  They take for granted that they are going to wake up on Christmas morning and all they wanted will be there.  I am not sure how that tradition goes now maybe Santa has taken to bugging each house and that is how he knows but I think that there were many important things going on when we made those lists.
Growing up, writing those letters gave me and my kids an element of magic and anticipation, it was something that you looked forward to as it kicked off the holiday season.  I also found that those were perfect teachable moments; my kids wanted to spell everything right, they wanted their handwriting to be perfect and I can't forget to mention it also gave me a moment of peace and quite.  Fortunately my kids never questioned why they didn't get certain items from the list; it was understood that it was a Wish List. But to keep them encouraged I did make sure at least a few of those things on the Wish List would arrive on Christmas morning.
I hope that more families will be able to find the time to teach this fun holiday tradition to their kids and please, as a favor...Don't have them text Santa the list.

Have a blessed day.

Today is Captain Kangaroo's birthday! Unfortunately many of our younger generations will never know the kind spirit of his television show.
This wonderful Vintage Puzzle was found in ETSY Shop, Pam's Craft, at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/pamscrafts7631?ref=seller_info

The Captain Kangaroo Show truly taught a message that was wholesome and did not include bodily functions. Don't get me wrong I enjoy a good Sponge Bob episode just like the next kid but I do get an intense feeling of nostalgia when I think of his show along with the old version of Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers.

As a child I hated to hear adults say "the world is certainly a different place" or "you live in a different world..." but now I find myself thinking those exact statements today. I am sure that the new "normal" is perfectly fine for this upcoming generation; I just miss the days when we were easily entertained by a Muppet or a moose with ping pong balls falling on his head.
I still love little Lamb Chop.  This sweet little creature can be found in ETSY Shop GatorMom13 at http://www.etsy.com/shop/gatormom13?ref=seller_info
This early Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop Golden Book was found on ETSY shop Apple Charlotte

So in honor of Captain Kangaroo let’s travel back in time and celebrate childhood innocence and public broadcasting. XOXOXO~PBS and Children's Television.

I'm Leaving On A Jet Plane...Almost. But Here Are My Top Dream Vacations Anyways

So I'm stuck in the airport waiting for a broken plane. It is especially disappointing since I have been away from my Husband for a week and was really looking forward to getting home. I will officially have been without sleep for 24 hours. I want to go home!!!! Anyway I still love to travel.
This wonderful vintage postcard was found in ETSY Shop Smooth Sea's Vintage Eclectia
http://www.etsy.com/shop/smoothseas?ref=seller_info
Most everyone I know has had dreams of grand vacations and trips to lands far away. As I have mentioned in prior posts the root of my travel bug stems from looking at the postcards I was given as a child. One of my childhood dreams was Disney Land.
This wonderful Wall Hanging was found in ETSY Shop GreenPix at
http://www.etsy.com/shop/greenpix?ref=seller_info
Not only did I have the postcards with brightly colored images of wild rides and characters but I had the Mickey Mouse Club.
These wonderful vintage dolls can be found in ETSY Shop Jovelin B at
http://www.etsy.com/people/jovelinb?ref=ls_profile
I wanted to be a Mouseketeer so bad. Needless to say I was never featured on that show, but I have been blessed to have seen both Disney World and Disney Land.
A wonderful piece of Mickey Mouse Club history found in ETSY Shop RareVinyl at
http://www.etsy.com/people/rarevinyl?ref=ls_profile
Now I sit here still dreaming of my grand adventures and since I was able to fill that childhood dream of Disney Land I have high hopes that my others will come true too. So here is to dreams and faraway lands...My Top Five Dream Vacations...
Number 1 - Baden Baden Germany - Land of my ancestors; home of my Grandfather.
From my personal collection of Antique Postcards
Number 2 - Africa - In a book by Carl Jung (a brilliant psychologist from the early 1900's) he writes about a trip to Kenya, Uganda and other parts of East Africa. While traveling with a nomadic tribe through the Savannah after a while he felt time stands still. There were no deadlines, no clocks to tell you that you were late just the sun. They rose and retired with the sun. As I watch my life speed pass I would love to have that moment where time stands still.
This and many other amazing photographs are available in ETSY Shop Sam Clark Photography at
http://www.etsy.com/people/samclarkphotography?ref=ls_profile
Number 3 - Viterbo Italy - I graduated from Viterbo University. The University of Viterbo has a rich history of its own and was given the name Viterbo as a tribute to the home country of the Franciscan Sisters that founded the school. The city also has a beautiful and rich history. While there I would include a visit to the traditional American travel favorites of Florence and Rome.
This amazing print can be found in ETSY Shop Italian Pop at
http://www.etsy.com/people/ItalianPop?ref=ls_profile
Number 4 - The Macy's Parade in New York - My husband's and my favorite movie (even before we met each other) has been the Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street. I have always wanted to watch the Macy's Parade from a hotel window or balcony.
This wonderful find can be purchased in ETSY Shop Cross Eyed Cat Gifts at
http://www.etsy.com/people/CrossEyedCatGifts?ref=ls_profile
Number 5 - Cape Cod - As a teen my family would watch Murder She Wrote. It also seemed to be a trend to write mystery books in that same setting. I was a big fan of Mary Higgins Clark and one of her first books was written with the Cape as the setting.
This wonderful Oil Painting can be found in ETSY Shop RussPotak at
http://www.etsy.com/people/RussPotak?ref=ls_profile
I would love to hear from you about your Dream Vacation, please make a comment with a note of where you dream to go. I may blog about the top 5 favorites if at least 5 people comment. So spread the word. Have a wonderful and peaceful night.
