IT FEELS LIKE SEPTEMBER; Upcycled on Etsy

Fall is suddenly approaching, the days are growing shorter and the lazy summer nights are becoming cooler.  Even in the desert you can notice a change; crows have found their voice and are chatting away about their upcoming winter adventure as the hum of crickets and Cicadas are dying down.  Kids are back in school and settling into their routines, summer vacation has already become a memory for most and parents rushing from work to school to practices and games has become the family's beaten path. 

I have always enjoyed September, while in the Midwest I was an avid gardener and loved this time of year.  The garden would be winding down but the bright Sunflowers, Mums, and Marigolds would fill out into their splendor and as I drove up my driveway they would always great me with their cheery burst of color.  I lived by an apple orchard for much of my life and so September has always been associated with the beginning of the apple harvesting season. 

How beautiful and simple is a ripe red apple hanging from the tree.  Bushel baskets lining the little shop wall with every flavor and color of apple possible with cute patterned signs announcing their names; Macintosh, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and so many more.  Although we visited the orchard regularly we would always have to sample the different apples as if this was are first time stopping in.

This week I have been promoting two different opportunities that will be great methods of self promotion for other shops and myself.  I am often trying to find ways to promote other independent small businesses and shops so your support is greatly appreciated.  I don't only do this help others I do it to help myself; I am a collective thinker.  Most of us that own small shops do not have the same resources that big stores and chains have and we can easily be pushed aside or forgotten in the midst of their glorious advertising and media power.  Our method of survival will have to be by banding together and pooling what resources we have.  So with that being said; my rally cry "Small Shops Arise!" come join me in some of our fun little adventures this month and hopefully we will be those next rising stars.

A Quest For The Great Pumpkin

The sound of crunching leaves and giggles fill the crisp cool air.  The smell of damp hay warming in the midday sun greets my senses.  Faded corn stocks and brightly colored orange and green squash line the pathway as we walk to join the other happy families for a wagon ride.  The farmer looks back to make sure everyone is seated and starts the tractor engine with a giant PUFF!  The wagon jerks and bumps through the field as the kids sit tight barley containing their excitement.

The wagon stops.  Rows and rows of pumpkins as far as the eye can see.  Out of breath and glowing with red rosy cheeks my children proclaimed "I am going to get one bigger than me!"  Fifteen minutes later my son and daughter are struggling with the largest pumpkin they could find.  Flat on one side and bigger than a 3 year old child it is picked up and dropped, tugged on and tripped over but the stem is still in tact...its a keeper.  Beaming with pride my children help me carry it to the wagon and we are on our way back through the bumpy field.

At home they proudly help me outline the face I should cut into their giant pumpkin.  They smile in amusement as they pick through the slimy innards finding the seeds to roast.  "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" plays in the background as we finish the masterpiece.  Beautiful.
