Saturday's Gem - Amethyst

Amethyst is part of the quartz family and is just like its relatives made of silica.  The quartz family is directly formed from cooling igneous magma that crystallizes during the low temperature stage.  It is one of the most common minerals and is found as a component in granite and sandstone along with many other common rocks.  But what makes Amethyst stand out in the quartz family is its pretty purple color.

Amethysts can vary in shades of purple from a very light lilac to a brilliant royal purple.  But when Amethyst is heated in extreme temperatures (such as over 500 degrees) it will become a yellow - brown color, Citrine, or even a greenish color.  It is often done now in labratories to create Citrine but it can also occur in nature where the Amethyst has been exposed to high heat from volcanic activity and the color changes naturally.
These beads are a wonderful example of the varience in colors that can occur.  You can purchase this lovely combination from KanduBeads at:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/KanduBeads?ref=seller_info
They are usually in the shape of a standard 6 sided crystal with some variations.  You may find amethyst that have "twinning" that means that it has two crystals forming from one base going out in two different directions.  They can also be found where there is a smaller "stem" like crystal with a larger crystal at the top, these are called Sceptre Quartz or Scepter since that is what they resemble.  Amethyst will often form in a cluster of crystals with a host rock holding it together at the base.   There are also Amethyst that have a Druzy Quartz appearance which are very pretty and make a great display let alone jewelry pieces.
This wonderful example of a Amethyst Crystal was found in Etsy Shop SolitaryMountain at http://www.etsy.com/shop/SolitaryMountain?ref=seller_info
I love this necklace and it shows a great example of a Druzy Amethyst.  It can be bought at Etsy shop ThirteenGems at http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThirteenGems?ref=seller_info
It is commonly found in many countries throughout the world but the large geodes that have become so popular among gem and mineral collectors are often found in Brazil.  I have been blessed with finding several pieces of Amethyst in California and it is relatively common to find them throughout the state and actually throughout the entire US.
A beautiful example of a Cathedral Geode found in Etsy shop WickedManerals at http://www.etsy.com/shop/WickedMinerals?ref=seller_info
Amethyst is February's Birthstone and has many important properties metaphysically.  Over the years it has been worn by priests to symbolize spiritual power and Romans to symbolize physical power.  Amethyst is also associated with easing guilt and fear.  It is also worn by travelers to protect them from sneak attacks and treachery.  Not only is the stone considered a protective stone but it is also is known to have powerful healing properties; it is reported ted to help ease headaches, insomnia and nightmares.  It is also reported to help the wearer be able to become more intuitive and in touch with the inner self.

Of course I have found some wonderful pieces of jewelry, specimens, and beads to share with you from Etsy.
