Aromatherapy Thursday - Diffusers

Over the last year I have discussed many wonderful essential oils used in Aromatherapy.  There are many ways to use essential oils to benefit from their Aromatherapy properties: massage oils, home spa, Potpourri, perfume, and many more.  But one of the easiest and less time consuming ways to fragrance your space and benefit from the properties would be to simply use the essential oils in a Diffuser. 

To use a Diffuser you will simply put your choice of either essential oils or essential oil blend in the reservoir, bottle or whatever area that is designated for that purpose.  Some include things like reeds to whisk the oil up and slowly diffuse the fragrance into the air, while some use mini fans, and others still use rely on heat.  The general goal of Diffuser is to gently "diffuse" the oil into the air thus fragrancing it and providing the benefits of aromatherapy to the user.

One thing to note is that you should always use high quality essential oils when practicing aromatherapy because while fragrant oils are great smelling they will not provide any of the chemical benefits that the true essential oil provides.  There are special natural chemicals in every essential oil that provides different signals to the brain when they are drawn in through the nasal cavity.  So it only works if you are using the actual oil derived from the plant, flower, peel, etc.  On the other side, some of the chemicals used in making the synthetic oils could give a person negative effects such as headaches.  But also note that even when using high quality essential oils negative effects can occur and allergy test should always be conducted.  Certain oils should be used with more caution than others and it is always good to do your research first before blending your own.

Some Diffusers can be very techie and have multiple settings, while some are very basic and are simple to use and understand.  There are also choices for what area you want to use it in such as if you are using it in your car or your home.

Create Book Shelves

I am always looking for classy ways to upcycle vintage items or to use collectibles that start to accumulate. I also want only those projects that fit appropriately in a classy home setting. I really love this idea with old books, it actually looks very classy and would fit perfect in someones library or den. I enjoy old books so much but since the Nook and those like it have come out people are not as interested in the hard copies. I personally rather read it from a book and physically hold onto the item but I am older and this is a new age. I hope you find this as cool a project as I did.

The Colors Of Christmas Morning

I have never been a big fan of the color combination red and green.  I am not sure why because I absolutely love Christmas and have never felt the bah humbugs so it is not an anti-Christmas thing. 


I love to decorate in blues and whites or bright flashy pink paired with crystal clear ice.  I went through a Victorian trend with ivory and rose and many other but very few included those traditional tones.  It is possible that my reasons are simply that I must break the rules and thus you more than likely will never see my house donning red and green.

Log Cabin In The Midwest (My Little House)

When I was growing up I spent most of my childhood living in a beautiful log home.  It was hand built by my parents and skillfully decorated by my mother.  The log cabin was nestled at the base of a sloping bluff in the countryside of Wisconsin.  It reminded me of the stories from Little House that I had read many times.  In the fall the colors would pop; yellow from the Paper Birch, burnt umber from the mighty Oak, bright pinkish orange from the Sugar Maples and the deep rich green from the many varieties of pine dotting the forest behind our house.

I was blessed with a large 70+ acre yard and took many long walks through the trees.  My favorite pastime was to hike towards the top of the bluff and along the way I would discover many new herbs and plants.  The air would be damp and cool, the sun was bright cutting through the mist, and the forest bed would emit a the sweet smell of freshly fallen autumn leaves with every step I took.  I would get so excited at the thought of what I could make with the scraps of paper birch bark, the dried herbs or the nuts that I harvested (if I beat the squirrels to them.)  It was a wonderful playground that tantalized the imagination.  I often came home loaded down with treasures to cook, dry, or decorate with. 
Despite being a modern construction the log cabin had many antiques and features that gave it the old fashioned country feel.  My favorite was the old cast iron wood stove in the dining room.  I loved this little wood burner since it was one of the only sources of good dry heat that would successfully dry all of my treasures.  I carefully bundled the herbs by their stems and hung them around the freshly stoked stove.  I begged for any old sheet pan my mother had and placed the small items into the oven space. Most often the house would be filled with aromas of drying mint, comfrey, and chamomile (my favorites and these were the most abundant herbs.)   I looked forward to the days it was cool enough to start the wood stove since in the Midwest it was always so humid that drying things was a challenge.

While I no longer make the home brew teas, I still make the other natural crafts and continue to add my own personally collect and dried touches to each.  I love my new life in California and rarely miss the cold winters of the Midwest but I get a touch of nostalgia with each project I create as it takes me back through time to my little log cabin at the base of the hill.

Tell me a bit about yourself……
I’m 40 something… married to a wonderful husband for the past 20 years. We have one son who’s 16 and driving. We make our home in Southern California.  Painting is my passion. Fortunately, I have a very supportive family and plenty of room for a kiln and a painting studio. 

   Apart from creating, what do you do?
During the day, I work full time as a Human Resource Manager and Accountant for a Wealth Management Firm in Orange County, CA. Nights and weekends are either spent hanging out with my family or painting.

What first made you want to create?
When I was 7, my dad, a teacher and father of 5, took the whole family to a ceramic shop. He signed us up for a class to learn how to paint.  On a teacher’s salary this was a low budget outing for a large family.  I loved it from the beginning and I’ve been painting ever since.

Describe your creative process?
When I sit down to paint, I first have to picture the item in my head completely finished.   I picture the different colors or design I want to use. Once it’s planned out in my head I just start painting.

What handmade possession do you cherish most?
My dad used to paint with me. He’s no longer able to paint unfortunately. But together we have made many things. The most cherished item is a nativity that we painting together. It has about 24 pieces and all of the animals were painted using suede paint so they look real.  Sadly, they no longer sale suede paint. Someday I will paint another nativity and add it to my shop to sell but they are very time consuming so I’m not sure when.


What one piece of information would you like to know from experienced etsy sellers?
I have many questions for them but to keep it simple, I would love to know more about custom ordering.  I sell my ornaments like crazy when I’m in stores or craft shows, but it’s been a slow start on Etsy.  I would love to have some advice on how to get the ball rolling.

How are you promoting your work?
On Etsy, I’ve joined several teams. I try to participate regularly in the team discussions. I just started creating treasuries too. Outside of Etsy, I have listed my shop with several online craft directories and malls.  I’m also on Link Referral daily.


Where do you want to be in ten years?
Well, my husband will be retired by then so hopefully I will be too, from the day job that is.  I can’t wait for the day I can paint whenever I want.  Together we would like to travel some and live near our son, where ever he lands.
